Spring Box Beds with Storage: A Simple UK Guide

Spring Box Beds with Storage: A Simple UK Guide

A spring box bed, sometimes called a box spring or continental bed, is one of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel more like a hotel. It sits higher than a standard bed frame, has a deep mattress built into the design and, in our range, hides a bedding container inside the base. This guide explains how spring box beds work, who they suit and what to check before you order, using the spring box beds with storage we sell as examples.

What is a spring box bed?

A spring box bed is built in layers. At the bottom is a sturdy upholstered base. On top of that sits a sprung mattress, and on top of the mattress there is usually a topper. The headboard is tall and upholstered to match, so the bed looks like one finished piece of furniture rather than a frame with a mattress dropped into it.

On our spring box beds, the mattress is a Bonnel spring mattress. Bonnel springs are linked coil springs that give a firm, even base, and the topper adds a softer layer you can sink into. Because the bed is made as one design, you do not have to shop for a separate mattress that may or may not fit the frame.

Why choose a spring box bed with storage?

Most UK bedrooms are short on cupboard space. Every spring box bed in our Beds & Spring Box range that we feature in this guide has a bedding container built into the base, which you reach by lifting the sleeping area. It is a handy place for spare duvets, pillows, winter blankets or out-of-season clothes.

  • More storage without more furniture: the container uses space under the bed that would otherwise be wasted or gather dust.
  • A higher, easier bed to get in and out of: spring box beds sit noticeably higher than many traditional frames, which a lot of people find more comfortable.
  • A finished, upholstered look: the base, mattress and headboard are designed together, so the bed becomes the focal point of the room.

Cambridge Spring Box Bed with Storage

The Cambridge Spring Box Bed collection is a clean, modern design with a high headboard finished in checkered stitching. It is offered in three sizes, 145, 165 and 185 cm wide by 210 cm long. Comfort comes from a 15 cm Bonnel mattress combined with a 4 cm topper. The Cambridge Spring Box Bed with Storage S33, pictured at the top of this article in cream eco leather, shows how simple lines can still look smart.

Cheeky Spring Box Bed with Storage

If you want a bed with more personality, the Cheeky Spring Box Bed collection has deep longitudinal quilting on both the base and the headboard. It comes in 140, 160 and 180 x 200 cm sleeping sizes and has the most generous comfort layers of the beds in this guide: a 20 cm Bonnel mattress, two extra layers of T25 foam and a 4 cm sewn topper. A spring mechanism helps lift the base, so you do not need to use force to reach the bedding containers. Take a look at the Cheeky Spring Box Bed with Storage B03 to see the quilting up close.

Signature Spring Box Bed with Storage

The Signature Spring Box Bed collection keeps decoration to a minimum, which makes it easy to fit into almost any bedroom. It is offered in 140, 160 and 180 x 215 cm sizes, has a high stitched headboard and two large containers for bedding. Including its 2 cm legs, mattress and topper, the Signature measures 55 cm from the floor to the sleeping surface. See the Signature Spring Box Bed with Storage M09 for an example.

Norfolk Spring Box Bed with Storage

The Norfolk Spring Box Bed collection pairs a simple base with a high quilted headboard that is comfortable to lean against when you are reading or watching TV in bed. It has a 15 cm Bonnel mattress and comes in 140, 160 and 180 x 200 cm sizes, so it can work in a main bedroom or a smaller room. The Norfolk Spring Box Bed with Storage M97 is shown in charcoal Easy Clean velvet fabric.

Singles Spring Box Bed with Storage

For smaller bedrooms, guest rooms and studio flats, the Singles Spring Box Bed collection comes in two space-efficient sizes, 120 x 200 cm and 140 x 200 cm. It has a seat height of 63 cm, a geometrically stitched headboard, a total height of 108 cm and a bedding container of 120 x 116 x 19 cm. What to check before you buy

Measure your room and the bed size

Spring box bed sizes are listed by sleeping area, and the outside of the bed, including the upholstered base and headboard, will be a little larger. Check the dimensions on the product page, then measure your room, leaving space to walk around the bed and open wardrobes and drawers. Marking the outline on the floor with masking tape is a quick way to see how it will feel.

Leave room to open the storage

The bedding container is reached by lifting the sleeping area, so you need clear space above the bed and enough room at the side to reach in. Avoid placing the bed under a low shelf or a sloping ceiling that could get in the way.

Choose a fabric that suits your home

Our collections are offered in a choice of colours and materials, from eco leather to velvet and boucle fabrics. Remember that colours can look slightly different on different screens, so contact us if you need an exact shade. Our guide to durable sofa fabrics covers the same questions for upholstery in general.

Check access on delivery day

Like a large sofa, a spring box bed needs a clear route from the front door to the bedroom. Measure doorways, landings and any tight turns on the stairs. Our guide on how to measure access before delivery walks you through what to check.

Spring box bed or lift up storage bed?

We also sell lift up storage beds, such as the Dayspring and Chelsea collections. Both types give you storage under the bed. The main difference is that a spring box bed is designed with its own sprung mattress and topper as part of the bed, while a lift up storage bed is a frame that you pair with a mattress of your choice. If you are also weighing up a sofa bed for a spare room, read our comparison of a storage sofa bed or lift up storage bed.

Ordering and delivery

At the time of writing, the spring box beds in this guide are made to order and show as pre-order on their product pages. Delivery times can vary by model and can change, so always check the delivery information on the product page before you order, especially if you need the bed by a particular date. Pillows and bed linen shown in the photos are not included.

The bottom line

A spring box bed with storage is a smart choice if you want a higher, more comfortable bed and extra space for bedding without adding another piece of furniture. Choose the Cheeky for the deepest comfort layers and bold quilting, the Cambridge or Signature for clean modern lines, the Norfolk for a supportive headboard, or the Singles for a smaller room.
