How to Clean a Fabric Sofa Bed at Home

A sofa bed has more working parts than a standard sofa, so a quick scrub with too much water can create more problems than the original spill. Knowing how to clean fabric sofa bed upholstery properly helps keep the seating fresh, protects the fabric and avoids moisture reaching the mattress, storage compartment or folding mechanism.

The best method depends on the fabric and the type of mark. A light surface clean is usually enough for everyday use, while a food, drink or pet stain needs prompt spot treatment. Always start gently. Rubbing hard, soaking the material or using the wrong cleaner can leave a water ring, flatten the pile or fade the colour.

Check the fabric care label first

Before using any cleaning product, look for the care label. It may sit beneath a removable cushion, underneath the seat base or inside the sofa bed storage area. The label tells you what the upholstery can handle.

Many fabric sofas use one of these cleaning codes: W means water-based cleaning is normally suitable, S means use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner, WS means either may be used, and X means vacuum only or professional cleaning. These codes are useful, but the manufacturer’s specific instructions should always take priority.

If there is no label, treat the fabric as delicate. Use a very small amount of moisture, test your chosen cleaner on a hidden area and allow it to dry fully before cleaning a visible section. This is particularly important with velvet-look fabrics, dark colours, textured weaves and pale upholstery.

What you need to clean a fabric sofa bed

For most routine cleans, you do not need expensive equipment. A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, soft white cloths, a soft-bristled brush, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid are usually enough for water-safe fabric.

Use white or colourfast cloths only. A bright tea towel can transfer dye onto light upholstery, especially when damp. Keep a dry towel nearby too, as removing excess moisture quickly is just as important as applying the cleaning solution.

Avoid bleach, washing powder, fabric conditioner and general-purpose sprays unless they are clearly approved for your sofa’s material. Strong household cleaners may remove a stain, but they can also leave a patch that looks worse than the mark.

How to clean a fabric sofa bed step by step

1. Open the sofa bed and remove loose items

Take off loose cushions, throws and bedding. If your sofa bed has a storage compartment, empty it before cleaning around the base. Opening the bed gives you access to the joins where crumbs, dust and pet hair collect, and it allows air to circulate while the upholstery dries.

If the mattress is removable, set it aside somewhere dry. Do not place it directly on a damp floor or against a radiator.

2. Vacuum every surface and seam

Vacuum the seat, back, arms, removable cushions and side panels using the upholstery tool. Use the crevice attachment around stitching, under cushions and near the folding frame. Dirt particles can work into the fibres and make fabric look dull, so this stage makes a noticeable difference even before any spot cleaning.

For a textured fabric, brush lightly in one direction after vacuuming. This lifts trapped dust without roughing up the material.

3. Make a mild cleaning solution

For a fabric marked W or WS, mix a few drops of mild washing-up liquid into a bowl of lukewarm water. You want a lightly soapy solution, not a bowl full of foam. Too much detergent is difficult to remove and can leave a stiff residue that attracts more dirt.

Dip a cloth in the mixture and wring it out thoroughly. The cloth should feel damp, not wet enough to drip. Test it on an inconspicuous patch first, such as the rear lower edge of the sofa bed. Check for colour transfer, watermarking or a change in texture once dry.

4. Clean one small section at a time

Work on a manageable area, using gentle dabbing or light circular motions. Do not saturate the fabric. Start at the edge of the section and move inwards so you are less likely to create a visible tide mark.

After cleaning, wipe the area with a second cloth lightly dampened with plain water to remove any soap. Then press a dry towel onto the fabric to absorb moisture. Repeat across the sofa bed, changing cloths when they become dirty.

For large corner sofa beds or U-shaped models, clean in sections over more than one day if needed. Rushing through a bigger piece of furniture often means using too much water.

5. Let it dry fully before folding it away

Leave the sofa bed open or partly extended in a well-ventilated room until the fabric is completely dry. Open windows where practical, or run a fan nearby. Keep direct high heat away from the upholstery, as radiators and hairdryers can affect some fabrics and may cause uneven drying.

Do not close the bed while the seating or mattress area is damp. Trapped moisture can lead to musty smells and, in the worst case, mildew in the storage area or around the mechanism.

Removing common sofa bed stains

The sooner you deal with a spill, the better the result. Blot liquid straight away with a dry, absorbent cloth. Press down firmly, then lift. Never rub from side to side, as that pushes the spill deeper into the fibres and spreads it across a wider area.

For tea, coffee or squash, blot first, then use the mild water-based method if the care label permits it. Work from the outside of the stain towards the middle. Repeat with a clean damp cloth and dry the area with a towel.

For food marks, lift away solids carefully with a spoon or blunt edge before blotting. Avoid scraping hard, particularly on woven upholstery. If a greasy mark remains, use an upholstery cleaner approved for the fabric type rather than adding extra washing-up liquid.

For ink, makeup, wine or oil-based stains, do not guess with a home remedy. These marks often need a suitable solvent cleaner or a professional upholstery service, depending on the care code. Applying water to the wrong type of stain can set it or spread the pigment.

Pet accidents need fast attention. Blot up as much moisture as possible, then use a fabric-safe cleaner designed for the care label. A product that tackles odour as well as the stain is usually more effective than perfume-based sprays, which can simply mask the smell.

Freshening the mattress and storage area

A fabric sofa bed is used for sitting most of the time, but the sleeping section also needs attention. Vacuum the mattress surface where possible and allow it to air after overnight guests. If the mattress has a removable cover, follow its individual washing instructions rather than treating it like the sofa upholstery.

For light odours on a dry mattress or upholstery surface, a thin layer of bicarbonate of soda can help. Leave it for a few hours, then vacuum thoroughly. Test first if the fabric is dark or delicate, and do not use this method on damp material.

Wipe the inside of a hard storage compartment with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Keep bedding only when it is fully dry, and avoid packing the compartment too tightly. Air needs to move around the folding sections so the sofa bed stays fresher between uses.

When professional cleaning is the better choice

A professional clean is worth considering for a heavily used family sofa bed, a large old stain, a strong odour or upholstery marked X or S. It is also the safer route if the fabric is velvet, wool-rich, suede-effect or an unusual textured material.

Professional cleaning costs more than a bottle of upholstery cleaner, but replacing damaged seating costs more again. For a sofa bed that doubles as everyday family seating and a guest bed, booking a deeper clean every 12 to 18 months can be a sensible way to protect its appearance.

Keep the clean longer

Vacuuming once a week, dealing with spills immediately and rotating loose cushions where possible will reduce the need for intensive cleaning. A washable throw is useful on the main seat area if children, pets or regular guests use the sofa bed often.

A good fabric sofa bed should earn its place in the room by offering comfortable seating, an extra sleeping space and practical everyday value. Clean it gently, let it dry properly and it will stay ready for both the next film night and the next unexpected overnight guest.
